چکیده

Purely rotational transitions of a molecule embedded in large He clusters have been detected for the first time. The saturation behavior shows that, in contrast to previous expectations, the microwave line profiles are dominated by inhomogeneous broadening mechanisms. Spectral holes and peaks produced by microwave-microwave double resonance have widths comparable to those of single resonance lines, indicating that relaxation occurs among quantum states of the inhomogeneous distribution of each rotational level, at a rate ≈10 times faster than rotationally inelastic relaxation.

Finite size effects and rotational relaxation in superfluid helium nanodroplets: Microwave-infrared double-resonance spectroscopy of cyanoacetylene

Microwave-infrared double-resonance spectroscopy has been used to probe the solvation environment and its influence on the rotational relaxation of a cyanoacetylene molecule embedded in a superfluid He nanodroplet. The results support a model in which ~within any given rotational state! the guest molecules are distributed over a set of spectroscopically inequivalent states which are most likely...

Microfluidic Chambers for Studies of Confined Superfluid He-3

We have studied superfluid helium-3 (He-3) confined to submicron slab geometries inside nanofabricated, microfluidic chambers. Two separate techniques were used to study the He-3 inside the chambers; nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and the torsional oscillator (TO). The NMR studies have shown a significant modification to the superfluid He-3 phase diagram as a result of the confinement, wherea...

Cosmology, Particle Physics, and Superfluid 3he

Many direct parallels connect superfluid 3 He with the field theories describing the physical vacuum, gauge fields and elementary fermions. Superfluid 3 He exhibits a variety of topological defects which can be detected with single-defect sensitivity. Modern scenarios of defect-mediated baryogenesis can be simulated by the interaction of the 3 He vortices and domain walls with fermionic quasipa...

Ultra-high Q Acoustic Resonance in Superfluid He

We report the measurement of the acoustic quality factor of a gram-scale, kilo-hertz frequency superfluid resonator, detected through the parametric coupling to a superconducting niobium microwave cavity. For temperature between 400mK and 50mK, we observe a T−4 temperature dependence of the quality factor, consistent with a 3-phonon dissipation mechanism. We observe Q factors up to 1.4 · 10, co...
